If you mentioned the prospect of working from home to someone a decade back, he would probably laugh at your slow-wittedness!
With the trend of working from home catching on, I have so many friends who envy the fact that I pocket a cool amount every month right from my home.
There are so many things I love about working from home.
Advantages of Working From Home
I have been working from home for the last four years now. And, as Mc Donald’s says, ” ‘M Lovin’ It”.
Working from home can be great fun. But I would suggest all those who are keen to do so to be careful. They must know how to avoid work from home scams/ online frauds.
#1. No overheads
That is the best thing about a work from home job- you do not have to spend on office rentals, electricity bills, no maintenance charges, no furniture and so on.
All I need to work from home is my laptop and internet connection. I might need to buy another computer soon- a desktop this time. But even then, the expenditure on these is a lot less when you work from home that I would have to if I operated from an office.
If I need to get more people to work for me, I simply outsource my work online, and don’t have to put up with employee tantrums as well.
No need to spend on office ware and gas/ petrol either.
The best thing about working from home is that you get to choose your working hours. You are not tied up due to work.
And mind you, it is not just about the timings. The flexibility related to working from home extends to a lot more beyond that!
» You can put on some light music while working if that is not a distraction for you.
» Chat to your friend over the phone just to catch up with him/her without getting dirty looks from your colleagues or the boss after working for some time.
» Not only that, you can choose the perfect table and chair for you instead of sulking in the one provided by your employees every day.
» Choose the right amount of lighting and the setting where you would be inspired to put in your best effort.
Facebook is a major distraction for most people like me who work online most of the time. You can let your Facebook Addiction Disorder, get the better of you and check your friends’ status and comment on their pics without being answerable.
I can choose to work from my living room, from the cozy comfort of my blanket during winters or even use my tablet while travelling.
Which office job gives you that much flexibility?
#3. Family Never Gets Ignored
This is one of the main benefits of working from home.
Kids and family are not ignored due to work. A regular office job can be very taxing, especially for females.
Most of them find it difficult to devote enough time to kids because of their work related commitments.
Since I am working from home, I never had to leave my toddler in a day care though I did have a nanny to help me when he was young. The apple of my eyes was never too far from me and I never ever felt guilty of ignoring him for the sake of my career.
Only last week, I was able to rush my mother in law to a physician when she tripped over my son’s toy and got a hairline fracture in her ankle without any waste of time. That was possible only because I was at home when she needed me most.
#4. Less wastage of time
People who work from home do not waste a lot of time commuting to their workplaces. An average Indian staying in the metropolitan cities of India (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai) spends at least 2-3 hours on commuting every day.
Just imagine the amount of extra work they would have been able to handle if they did not waste that much time due to the snarling traffic and the long distances they cover every day!
#5. Working from home results higher productivity
When you are not monitored by a nagging boss, pulled down by jealous colleagues, not constantly worrying about the kids back at home and take your important decisions yourself, you are a much happier person with higher productivity.
You can either accomplish the same task in a lesser amount of time or do more/ better work in the time at your disposal.
#6. Possibility of supplementing your income
If the nature of your work allows you to work from home and you can finish off your work faster than your boss expected, you can easily supplement your means of income.
You could sell some stuff over eBay, baby sit children from the neighbourhood or may be, teach a child or two to play the guitar in the evenings. In tough times like these, a few additional $$$ are always welcome!
#7. Choose your holidays
When you work from home, you do not have to plead with the boss to give you a few hours or days off work to relax or attend a wedding in the family or look up an ailing parents or catch up with friends.
If you can work till late at night or manage to meet your next week’s target within this week, you will not even be required to explain the whole thing to your boss- who only wants that much work from you.
Not only that, I do not spend as much on office attire as most of my ‘working’ female friends do- I can choose instead to buy two designer dresses every month.
And I do not have to wear a tight skirt and high heels to work much against my wishes- you will usually see me in a loose, faded t-shirts (or, a baggy pullover in winters) and my track pants or a pair of shorts.
I am free to sip on a glass of chilled beer in this sweltering heat if I choose to while I am logged in to my computer.
When I am working from my home, I feel like my own boss.
And THAT feeling can make everything else look trivial in comparison.
Well, they are the advantages of working from home as I experienced. How many of you wish to break your shackles off and work from home like me?
