It’s incredible to imagine that YouTube started less than a decade ago in 2005. Google didn’t even exist before 1998 and YouTube may not have been what it is today without Google quickly snatching up YouTube in 2006. Today YouTube has something no other Internet property has, a massive community built around the love of multimedia content.

Today, thousands upon thousands of users are succeeding using YouTube to create video channels that bring in millions of views.
With those who reach success, there are those who fall short. It’s common for a new channel to be planted and never sprout. Having the right game plan, the right attitude and preparing goals just within reach are some of the key aspects to succ
eeding. In this short and concise guide I’ll explain how to go about starting your YouTube channel and how easy it can be to start seeing results.
Start Seeing Results with Your YouTube Channel
Find Your Niche and Make it Unique
It can be overwhelming to think about how many active and established channels YouTube has. If the idea you have in mind is already being done, don’t give up on your interests. The trick is to find a way to make your channel unique. Decide now what will set your channel apart and offer something more interesting that the other more established channels aren’t doing.
Practicality plays in at this stage. What type of cameras do you have at your disposal? Will you even require cameras for your videos? Editing is something that stops many in their tracks. Video editing is often a skill that many don’t process. Luckily, there are free and simple programs like Windows Movie Maker that don’t require much skill at all. If you want something more advanced or want to outsource the work on the cheap, read on.

Finally, before you move on past the idea stage, start to think about how often you’ll be uploading videos. The more the better but not if the quality and effort is lacking. Figure out your own schedule and when you’ll be able to give time to your YouTube channel.
Craft the Perfect Name
Choosing a name can take some time and it should. The name you choose will be with you for as long as your channel exists. If you scan over the homepage and trending videos, you’ll notice that many of the channel names are short and catchy or witty and easy to remember. Write down a list of names you like and get some feedback from your friends and family, both online and off. This will help you narrow the list and possible add new names to it based on the feedback you get.
Although following a guide and sticking to it will greatly improve your chances of creating a successful and established YouTube channel, the future isn’t something anyone can foresee. For that reason, it may be worth noting that picking a name too specific could backfire if you decide to take your videos and channel in a different direction sometime down the road.
Appear Creative, Authoritative and Irresistible
People can’t help but judge or sum-up anything they see, within seconds. This is especially true when it comes to surfing the net. The appearance of your channel can help better bring together what your channel is all about. A stylish and impressive YouTube channel background will not only add visual eye-candy but establish to your visitors that you mean business. Video intros and outros can offer more chances to display branding, such as a logo or emblem. This logo could also be used as your channel avatar.

Make sure that however a visitor comes to find your channel, that they are greeted with your best effort. If someone were to watch a video of yours for the first time, it had better be 100%. If someone happens upon your channel, that channel background had better be professional and impressive. After all, the goal is to convert that visitor to not only a subscriber but a long-time fan of your work.
Let Your Audience Know You Exist
In these modern times with so many social networks it’s important to not only market yourself and your channel but market your channel in the right way, making sure you’re getting the most out of your time and energy. The first step is to find other channels that offer similar content as yours. Make a list or simply subscribe to these channels so you don’t lose track. You’ll want to start commenting on any new videos that these channels produce.
Keep your comments informative, in good taste and most important of all, add to the conversation. This will encourage others to reply to you which will mean more interest pointing to your channel. If you comment on the right channels’ videos regularly, you’ll be sure to start picking up subscribers. Video replies can work great but if you don’t add value (something the audience will like) then it could backfire.
If you’re willing to cough up some money, giveaways can effectively boost your subscriber count in a very short period of time. Find a prize that is closely related to your channel, something that you yourself would love to win. Hold a giveaway via a YouTube video and set the deadline a reasonable length away, allowing plenty of time for people to subscribe. This is where having a Twitter and Facebook page could help catapult things. Keeping active social pages updated will not only help stragglers find their way to your channel but it can be used to easily inform and discuss things about your channel and videos that you’d otherwise not be able to do on YouTube.
Rinse and Repeat
Above all, have fun doing what you love. If you are truly entertained by creating video on a certain subject and discussing that subject amongst your peers then it will hardly seem like work at all. Of course, do what you can with the time you have available. If you try to force work in or start procrastinating, you’ll likely end up with less than satisfactory videos and that will certainly show to your viewers.
If it helps, make a spreadsheet or write on a chalkboard everything you want to get done on a given day, a given week or however you want to format it. Keeping on-track, constantly marketing your channel and producing quality videos will lead you in a positive direction. Set small achievable goals that require effort: 20 subscribers, 100 subscribers, 500 subscribers, etc. Small goals are close enough to reach that it will keep you motivated to continue. Follow these basic steps and you’ll surely be added to the growing list of YouTube Successes!

Totally sold on YouTube marketing for 2013. I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s in store for those of us who really take YouTube seriously. I believe it’s in its infancy and we’re only seeing the beginning of a huge wave fo traffic to be had by those who get on board early. Cheers to you for encouraging people to do so!

Hi Josiah,
I’m a huge fan of using YouTube to create content. Most of the time I will embed my videos in blog posts and this helps increase engagement and keeps visitors on the page longer.
I use a tool called Screencast-o-matic to record my videos and it works well with the webcam too.
Thanks for the post.

Hi,
Is the name for the channel different from your user name? I know it is probably a stupid question, but I’m new to using YouTube to do a video. This year I’d like to gain ability to do this. Is there something for the new user that is good to go over. Sally

Hi Sally,
Both are the same by defualt but your username should be exactly what you want because it cannot be changed and it’s what people will see when viewing your videos or coming across them in search results. The channel title/name can be changed but it only appears on your channel page.
Very informative blog! Thanks for sharing the procedure of starting a Youtube Channel in a very understandable way. I will also try this.
Thanks a lot.
