It is such an irony how the internet world gives us unparalleled power to be productive, yet the never ending flow of information offers opportunity to distract ourselves. There’s email, online games, facebook posts, twitter messages, etc. Distractions everywhere! It’s getting harder and harder to finish your goals every minute (I’m even finding it hard to finish this article because my favorite television show now has its latest episode up online).
Are you with me here? If you are, then say goodbye to distractions now and get things done efficiently. You will then unlock more time for your hobbies and online fun when you are finish. Here are proven tips to focus easily online.
Tip #1: Asses Your Web History.
Ever check the nutritional facts of the food you always eat when you decide to take a diet? This works the same. The first step to solving a problem is to understand it, so start by assessing your web history and find out how you spend – or waste – your time online. As you scroll through your web history, you’ll recognize the pages you are visiting frequently and the sites that distracts you the most.
Tip #2: Blocked It!
Do you know how easy is it for anyone to go from working hard to hardly working? Most of the times, one to two click. The solution would be to set up barriers and blocked it. This will add extra needed clicks and therefore may prevent you to be distracted because it will give you just enough time to pause and ask yourself if you really need to spend time there. Some of the effective barriers are: logging out your online accounts, installing plugins that block distracting sites altogether, disable notifications, removing shortcuts icon of your favorite desktop programs and more.
Tip #3: Give Your Deadlines Teeth.
Sometimes, when we have too much time in our hand, we tend to procrastinate and find that it takes us longer to finish a task when we have plenty time rather than when we don’t have enough time. it’s time to be stricter and give your deadlines teeth. First you need to setup reasonable deadlines and then stick to it. Some ways that you can definitely stick to your deadline is by simply removing the power supply of your laptop giving you just the duration of your computer’s battery life to complete the task. You could also start working at a café especially if you know it will be closing in a next few hours.
Tip #4: Stop Multitasking.
In these modern times where in multitasking is a must, sometimes we tend to multitask too much. We watch television while we iron our clothes. Or even in businesses where people answer and entertain business calls while they are doing another office work. As much as we think we can juggle two or three tasks at once, we cant. So stop it and focus.
Tip #5: Use distractions as a reward.
It’s a no-no to totally deprive yourself in doing what you want. So our last tip would be to reward yourself. When your task is accomplished, reward yourself by giving into your distraction for 10-20 minutes. Once those 10 minutes are up, tear yourself away and move on to your next task.
Distractions break our concentration and lower our productivity. You may feel happy while doing it but in the end it will cause us stress because we didn’t really finish what we want to. So follow our tips above and be back on track online. The internet world is very powerful and the only way you can harness its true power is by self discipline. Better start it today!
